When criticizing religious enthusiasts for relying exclusively on \u201cimmediate inspiration,\u201d Locke blamed them for engaging in the \u201cassociation of ideas.\u201d Thus, he considered enthusiasm as a sort of madness. This essay examines Locke\u2019s analysis of madness against the backdrop of his \u201cway of ideas,\u201d thereby highlighting the specificity of his \u201cideational\u201d account of madness in light of his theory of knowledge, his concept of faith as \u201cassent,\u201d and his notions of reason and revelation, which he regarded as complementing and assisting each other.
