Guide for Authors

The journal „Философия“  (Filosofiya-Philosophy) considers only manuscripts which have not been sent for publication elsewhere.

When sending a manuscript to the Journal, the Author explicitly declares that the manuscript is not already submitted or under consideration for publication elsewhere.

By submitting a manuscript, the Author agrees to follow the Guidelines, requirements and ethical principles for scientific research publishing. The latter’s violation will be considered a refusal of cooperation between the Author and the Journal in future.

Manuscripts that do not correspond to the journal’s scope or manuscripts that are not prepared according to the Guidelines will be rejected without going through blind peer review’s procedure.

To contact the Editorial Board, please send an email to philosophy@azbuki.bg

Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts are to be sent electronically through the ScholarOne Manuscripts platform, which can be accessed here: Submit your manuscript.

Authors who do not have a registration for access to ScholarOne must register by following the instructions on screen and filling in the necessary information before they can continue.

In the platform the author can see a chronology of the manuscripts they have submitted and/or submit a new one using the option "Start New Submission" => "Begin Submission".

The process of submitting a new manuscript includes the following steps:

Step 1: The type of the manuscript is selected and the title and abstract are filled in, in Bulgarian or in English, depending on the original language of the text.

Step 2: All necessary files are uploaded; these include the title page, the main document, tables and/or figures. When sending a revised version, only the most recent files should be included. When updating a file, the original version should be deleted and the revised version - uploaded in its place.

Step 3: Keywords in Bulgarian or in English, depending on the original language of the text, are included.

Step 4: The names of coauthors are added by searching up their email address. Should any of the coauthors not have a registration, they can be added as a new user using the "Create New Author" option.

Step 5: Authors may propose the name of a potential reviewer, or request that a particular reviewer not be considered, using the "Add Reviewer" option. This is optional and the Editorial Board is not obligated to consider the request.

The list of potential reviewers must not include researchers affiliated with the same institution as the authors, as well as researchers with real or potential conflict of interest with the authors. The potential reviewers must not be members of the journal's Editorial Board.
Step 6: Should the research have received any funding, the submitting author discloses this information and answers the rest of the questions marked as obligatory.

Step 7: The author checks the unput information and corrects it as needed. It is compulsory to look over the final version of the manuscript (using the "View PDF Proof" option), after which the author clicks on "Submit".

Author Support

The submitted articles must contain original ideas and scientific results. The circumstantial description of widely known theories, terms or definitions which are easily accessible elsewhere is not encouraged.

All manuscripts sent for publication are examined using specialised instruments (such as StrikePlagiarism) to discover potential similarities between the submitted materials and other publications. The journal reserves the right not to publish a text which, upon examination, reveals a degree of similarity higher than 20%.

Referencing literature irrelevant to the submitted manuscript and enumerating sources not mentioned in the text is not permitted. In any manuscript self-citation must not exceed 20% of all sources cited.

The author is encouraged to have a personal researcher profile (such as Researcher ID/WoS, Scopus, ORCID), through which they can share their work and writings with the international scientific community. The personal ID number should be included in the author information.

The scientific articles, overview articles and short scientific communications which adhere to the journal’s guidelines go through a procedure of dual-anonymous reviewing by independent experts. In certain cases, such as when the manuscript is with an interdisciplinary focus, the Editorial Board may call in additional reviewers.

The decision for publication or rejection of the manuscript is based on the reviewers’ recommendation. Should the two reviewers’ opinions differ, a super-reviewer is appointed and their recommendation is taken as final. When the manuscript is returned to the authors for editing/rework, they must answer to the reviewers' specific notes, mark in colour the changes made to the text and provide reasoning in all cases where a suggestion has been dismissed.

The reworked manuscript must be returned within the previously determined timeframe.

A publication does not necessarily signify the Editorial Board’s agreement with the reviewers’ positions. The editors may edit the manuscripts, should that be necessary.

In the case of lack of confirmation for publication within six months, the author has the right to request in writing that their manuscript be retracted. The journal does not commit to informing authors whose manuscripts have been rejected.

Manuscript preparation

General guidelines

(1) Manuscripts may be submitted in Bulgarian or in English depending on the author’s opinion or on the reviewers recommendation.

(2) Recommended manuscript size – up to 25,000 characters for a research article and up to 15,000 characters for a book review (along with the spacing between words). There are no text formatting requirements for font type and size.

(3) It is not recommended to specifically format the text itself with regard to tabs, bullets and other similar symbols. Tabs should be used for table layout only.

You can examine the formatting of articles and book reviews both in Bulgarian and in English in the following examples::

Sample of an article  BG – PDF / BG – Word       EN – PDF / EN – Word

Sample book review BG – PDF / BG – Word       EN – PDF / EN – Word

Structure of the manuscript and preparation of the files for ScholarOne

Title page

Every manuscript must be made completely anonymous, so as not to compromise the review process. The author must make sure that all identifying information has been removed from the main document and is included in the title page in a separate file, which is not to be sent to the reviewers.

The title page must include:

Article title

Full name of the author (authors), institutional affiliation (including university, institute), city and country (with no mention of academic and other titles).

Detailed data about the author (authors) in English – including full name, academic title and scientific degree, institutional affiliation (including university, institute), city and country, personal ID of the author (WoS Researcher ID, Scopus Author ID, ORCID ID), work postal address, е-mail address for correspondence.

Acknowledgements (if any) are to be written in both Bulgarian and English. The funding of the scientific study is acknowledged in this section as well.

Any and all other identifying information, related to the authors and/or their institutions, organisations providing funding, etc., which could compromise anonymity.

Main document

Title of the article – it is recommended that the title of the article be short (5-10 words), with no abbreviations, and that it presents the main topic of study.

Abstract – contains the specific features of the study in a concise form – aim/subject, methodology used, main results and conclusions. The abstract must correspond to the title, keywords and text of the scientific work.

Recommended wordcount of the abstract – 150 words.

Keywords (between 3 and 6 keywords/phrases).

Main exposition

Should be structured in different sections, divided by short titles with a clearly indicated position in the hierarchy of the text.

Additional materials (if any) in the form of graphs, tables or illustrations must be readable and suitable to be processed with widely used programs and applications.

Notes – the cited archival sources and notes at the end of the text must be written only in the language of the main text of the manuscript. Their place should be marked in the text of the article with Arabic numerals as superscript, in ascending order.

References – references to literature which is irrelevant to the submitted text, or enumeration of sources not used in the text are not permitted. Self-citation is not encouraged, unless the manuscript is a continuation of a previously published material. The citing of sources must be in accordance with APA Style 7th Edition (2020).

The sources used (should the main text not be in the Latin script) are enumerated in two separate paragraphs in the end of the manuscript. In the first paragraph the sources are listed in their original script – Bulgarian authors first, followed by foreign authors. In the second paragraph the contents of the first are repeated, using the Latin alphabet (either transliterated or translated), and the authors are ordered alphabetically according to the Latin alphabet.

In the case that the manuscript is in Bulgarian, the title, abstract and keywords in English should follow.

Figures

Figures (illustrations) and their descriptions must be provided both in the main text and separately in an additional file in such a format, which allows for them to be processed and edited with widely used programs. As an exception, if the figures have a big size and cannot be put in the main text, their place must be explicitly shown – fig. 1, fig. 2, etc. The figures must be in such a format which allows any text they contain to be edited by the editors, and not in a picture format. Enumeration and description of the figures are to be put below them.

If possible, the figures should be created in graphics editor programs (Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PhotoShop) or in Excel. Titles of the figures must not be included in the image.

Tables

Tables and their titles must be provided both in the main text and separately in an additional file. Numeric data showcasing functional relations between magnitudes or variables can be presented in a table. Text tables complicate printing and reading of the articles, therefore their usage is not recommended.

Tables must be created in Word Table or Excel. They should be numbered consecutively according to their citation in the text. Every table must have a title. The number and title of tables are to be put above them. Any explanations needed are to be put below the table, marked with the appropriate symbols.

Notes and References

The list of references must include literary sources accessible for examination or consultation. All other sources, including archival sources, documents, laws, etc., including online sources, should be recounted in the Notes section. There can also be included additional explanations or information that would make the main text convoluted. Notes' place in the article text should be noted using Arabic numerals in square brackets.

References to other publications must be written in accordance with APA Style 7th Edition (2020). The examples below showcase how to do this.

Citations in the text

Authors, cited in the text, should be presented in one of the following ways:

Citing the author’s surname and the year of publication (Sendak, 2015).

If a particular page should be noted (e.g. p. 689), it must be done like this: (Sendak, 2015, p. 689).

Citing both authors’ surnames and the year of publication (Sendak & Wise, 2015).

In the case of three or more authors, only the name of the first author is written, followed by “et al.” and the year of publication (Sendak et al., 2015).

In case the author (or the institution they represent) wants the article to be accessible in its entirety for all readers, the journal can accommodate that through its webpage – after the payment of a protection fee that covers the costs associated with the article.

Publication of a manuscript

Publication is announced to the authors through an email, which contains the .pdf file of the article. The rights of the published text belong to the journal. The received .pdf file is not to be freely distributed, including in academic and social networks for sharing results of scientific research (e.g. ResearchGate.net and Academia.edu).

By sending a text and/or an illustration to the Editorial Board, the author agrees to give up the rights of their announcement, publication and distribution with the purpose of promoting the publishing house’s other journals, to the publisher – "Az-buki" National Publishing House.
