Abstract. The article presents a study of 12th grade students' understanding of
the concepts of “nationalism”, “globalism” and “patriotism”. The aim is to find out
expressed in the students' essays self-stereotypes and social attitudes, as well as the degree of comprehension of the concepts. The participants are 46 12th grade students aged 18-19. Students create an essay on the topic: “What do globalism, patriotism and nationalism mean in the modern world?”. Three teachers of Bulgarian language and literature assess each essay. Each text is evaluated in relation to the concepts of “patriotism”, “globalism”, “nationalism”. First, as a level of understanding and making sense of the concepts. Second, according to the degree of manifestation of the attitude – from extremely positive to extremely negative. Comprehension was assessed on a five-point scale. The level of manifestation of the attitude was assessed on a three-point scale. The results of the study show the low average value of understanding.
