Abstract. The article deals with the role and function of poetic texts for the creation of figurative characterisation of characters in the novel ‘Chagin’ by Evgeny Vodolazkin. The research is carried out in the context of the method of comparative analysis of translation. Translation techniques in relation to poetic passages and rhyming phrases are considered. The attention is focused on the poetic meters chosen by the author in order to embody the dominant motifs of the novel memory – oblivion – repentance and their translation. The analysis shows that the translation is subordinated to the author's intention in identifying the features of the phenomenal memory of the main character and the mechanisms of memorizing poetic texts.
